About Building with Nature

This movie shows why Building with Nature is important. Climate change is affecting the North Sea Region. Building with Nature helps to make coasts, estuaries and catchments of this region more resilient to climate change by both applying and learning from the implementation of BwN measures.

Building with Nature

For flood safety

The North Sea region is economically thriving and densely populated. In this prosperous and busy part of Europe, climate change increases the risk of flooding from rivers and the sea. To tackle the rising sea level, heavy rainfall and a higher discharge of the rivers, we need a new set of tools for water management.

With the Building with Nature project, the Interreg VB North Sea Region investigates solutions that make use of natural processes and materials instead of working against nature. Nourishing our coast line with sand to protect it from erosion, restoring meandering rivers to increase water storage capacity and planting vegetation which can retain water are examples of these solutions which can easily be adapted to the effects of climate change.  Added benefits are for example more space for nature and recreation.

The Building with Nature project will study these types of solutions in 13 pilot sites across the North Sea Region. In the future, we will know where and how these solutions are effective, what costs and benefits are involved and how they can be adopted.
